WORK STARTS ON SEELOS GROTTO IN CUMBERLAND(14 SEPTEMBER 2021)

Report & Photos by David & Paula Schoenadel

Devotees of Blessed Francis Xavier  Seelos, David ^ Paula Schoenadel, mark out the ground where the Seelos Grotto will be built    ©Save the Shrine St Peter ^ Paul Facebook Page

Supporters of the Shrine of St.Peter & Paul in Cumberland,Maryland have started work on the Seelos Grotto in the grounds. Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos served in the Parish.

The announcement was made on the Facebook page of Save the Shrine of SS Peter & Paul

They informed supporters that before starting work they prayed to Blessed Seelos, "then the digging of the foundation for the Grotto began. The foundation was dug down 18”. Block and crushed gravel filled the foundation with the final laying of a flat stone pad.

The stone Grotto is going up nicely. Soon a small concrete pad will be poured for the statue of Blessed Seelos to rest on.

What we would like to do is collect enough small size stone to set in the concrete pad. These small stone will be partially exposed on the surface so they can be seen in the pad under Blessed Seelos.

We thought it would great to have a small stone come from anyone who would like to contribute. Example of a pad with the small stone is shown above. We need to start collecting the stones now. There will be a yellow bucket at the Shrine by the Blessed Seelos Grotto site to drop off a stone. Hope we get a nice collection to add a personal touch. Thank you
As this exiting project progresses we will keep you updated.

NATIONAL SEELOS SHRINE IN NEW ORLEANS NOT DAMAGED BY HURRICANE IDA(4 Sept 2021)

Father Aaron Meszaros C. Ss. R. Parochial Vicar and local Superior of the Redemptorists based in New Orleans has written to the North American Conference of Redemptorists telling them of the situation in New Orleans following Hurricane Ida. According to a post on their Facebook page Father Aaron says "Our house, the Shrine of Blessed Francis X. Seelos & Welcome Center, and St. Mary’s Assumption Church were not damaged. The school suffered about half its roof shingles being torn off and damage to windows. Most likely, water damage too. The first and former Church of St. Alphonsus (no longer used in ministry) suffered significant damage. Our courtyard lost some beautiful trees. Minor issues for us, as I know of parishioners who have lost their roofs. So many, their livelihoods.I stayed until Wednesday to clean the fridges out. Most of the Redemptorist community is now dispersed through different communities in the Denver Province. The last few days have been difficult simply due to the heat and humidity. Not to mention the labor of life without electricity."

TheSeelos Welcome Center and Shrine will be closed until further notice due to power suppliers!

The Shrine of St Peter & St Paul in the Parish of Our Lady of the Mountains in Cumberland, Maryland, U.S.A. is to have a Seelos Grotto in the grounds behind the Shrine.

They anounced the news yesterday on their Facebook page. The Parish of Our Lady of the Mountains "have given their permission to the board of the Friends of the Shrine for a stone Grotto to be constructed in a designated area behind the Shrine outside. The hope is that the Stations of the Cross will be added to this area soon after. The Grotto will be dedicated to Blessed Seelos. A 36” statue is on order. This area will be a beautiful accessible location for outdoor prayer and reflection . As time goes by, the hope is to add plenty of beautiful flowers etc. Sharon was working in this area today and it looks great. We’ll continue to keep you posted and share pictures of progress.
We patiently wait for the coming canonization of Blessed Seelos to Sainthood. As you know he was a Pastor at SSPP, a very Holy Priest and teacher of the students at the Monastery. We remain prayerful , hopeful and thankful for all the good we have. With your help and support we look forward to the future, to promoting , preserving and sharing the amazing History of SSPP Shrine."

BREAKING NEWS FROM NEW ORLEANS(1 July 2021)

From the desk of Fr. Enderle: The Grant Rechen story

Page 3 Seelos Center News July 2021

On February 19, 2021, Edward and Paula Rechen came to the Shrine with their 14-year-old son, Grant, from Luling, Louisiana. Grant had been diagnosed with Galen Malformation, a rare blood vessel abnormality of misshapen arteries which connect directly with veins instead of connecting, as is normal, with capillaries. The capillaries help slow blood activity within the brain. With this condition, there results a rush of high-pressure blood into the veins. When the Rechen family arrived, they met with me for over an hour. They explained that Grant had already undergone 16 surgeries and had suffered two small strokes. I led the family in prayer with a first-class relic of Blessed Seelos.

I also blessed Grant and his family with the mission cross which Father Seelos carried in his ministry through the U.S. Our prayer was for a successful result in Grant’s upcoming surgery to be performed by specialists in New York City. Two weeks later, Grant was due to have his delicate brain surgery. On the day of the surgery, a phone call to the Shrine informed us that the surgery team had assembled for Grant’s surgery and discovered, to their amazement, that there was no need for surgery. There was no longer any evidence of the vein disorder. Praise God and Blessed Seelos!
