Father Rich Boever C.Ss.R. former Director of the National Seelos Shrine in New Orleans has told Seelos in Füssen that his Lung Cancer has returned and that he is very weak.In his message to us on Christmas Day he told us he was now in the Redemptorist Retirement Home in Tuscon,Arizona. He greatly appreciates where he is now living and asks that we "Say a prayer for me".

Füssen celebrated the Feast of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos with celebration and healing. Füssen is the only place within the whole of Germany apart from Redemptorist convents and monasteries where his feast is celebrated every 5th October.

The day kicked of with Holy Mass in Acht Seligkeiten in west Füssen with Holy Mass in honour of Blessed Seelos. This was an historic event as the Seelos Mass will never be celebrated there again as it it is due to be deconsecrated by Bishop Bertram Meier of Augsburg in February 2024, before being demolished to make way for a new kindergarten and new Parish Centre and a smaller Church to serve the west Füssen community.

Our Indian curate, Father Joshi Sebastian MCBS, celebrated the Mass in the Lady Chapel and Helene von Rechenberg played the organ.

After Lunch at 1430hrs Father Michael OFM lead the Seelos Healing service.He explained to those present the history of  the Sacrament and the order of service.The service was conducted in Seeloshaus and 13 of those present received the Sacrament of the Sick. The service lasted 45 minutes and included hymns and included praying Psalm 71 (70) and then everyone was asked to say what moved them most in the Psalm. Following the Sacrament of the Sick a hymn of thanksgiving to Our Lady was sung.Our Musical Director, Helene von Rechenberg accompanied everyone on the piano. Father Michael then invited all present to have coffee and cake on the top floor of Seelohaus.The service was appreciated by all who attended and thanks go to our Parish Priest,Father Frank Deuring for arranging the service even though he himself was unable to attend as he was ill.

Today is the Feast Day of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos who served at SS Peter & Paul from 1857-1862. He was known for his gentle ways, inspiring others to the faith, and his healing intervention. This morning at the Shrine, Pastor Fr. Greg & Fr. John co celebrated a Healing Mass. Fr. John gave a brief history of Blessed Seelos, had a beautiful homily where he challenged us to inspire others to the faith as missionary Blessed Seelos had done. At the end of the Mass there was a special healing blessing by Fr. John. We pray for all those suffering from afflictions of body, mind, & spirit. Blessed Seelos please pray for us. JOE GEORGE-

Today was a special day for the blessing and dedication of the statue and grotto of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos at the prayer garden behind the Shrine. Many thanks to Father John for presiding over the event and for Father Mark for his attendance and support. The sculptor, Wayman Scott IV and his family, the Knights of Columbus and sixty devoted spectators. I am including a video for those you missed it and some photos. I interviewed the sculptor and will share bits of that in the coming days!

The Statue of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos located in the Blessed Seelos Payer Garden attached to the Shrine of St Peter & Paul in Cumberland is once again in the news!

The Catholic Review which is the Archdiocesan Media outlet for Baltomore today published an artcile about the Statue and the up and coming Blessing which will take place this Sunday 1st October 2023. Included within the article is a photo of the Scultor Wayman Scott IV touching his work of art within the garden.

Here in Füssen we will be celebrating our great "Son of Füssen" Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos twice on his Feast Day 5th October 2023. Kicking of the day with Holy Mass in Honour of Blessed Seelos at 0830hrs in the Church of Acht Seligkeiten in west Füssen. Füssen is the only place in Germany apart from the Redemptorist Churches and Monasteries which officially celebrates his feastday. Parish Priest Father Frank Deuring will celebrate the Mass. 

 At 1430hrs there will be a HEALING SERVICE precided over by Father Deuring with those present able to recieve the Sacrament of the Sick, in Franz-Xaver-Seeloshaus.  Coffee and cake will be served after the service.

The Blessing of the Statue in Cumberland will no longer take place on the Feast of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos as the Parish Priest has decided to change the date to Sunday 1st October 2023 at 1400hrs. This caught the Shrine volunteers offguard as they had already ordered the brochues for the ceremony online! They told Seelos in Füssen today that they still that they hope the Healing Mass will still go ahead on his Feast Day 5th October at 0800hrs.

Meanwhile in Füssen the Healing Mass which was to be celebrated at 0830hrs on the 5th October in Acht Seligkeiten seems to be in limbo as no mention of it was made in the Parish Newsletter for August & September leaving very little time to allow those who are sick to organise attending the Mass to recieve The Sacrament of the Sick!

For those in New Orleans as the Seelos Healing Masses will take place as advertised below

A Healing Mass followed by the Blessing & Dedication of the Stature of Blessed Seelos,which is located in the Seelos Prayer Garden will take place at 0800hrs on the 5th October 2023,the Feast of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos.Blessed Seelos served the Cumberland community from 19th May 1857 until 1862.Founded in 1848 by Redemptorist Bishop John Neumann, who later became America’s first male saint, The Shrine of Saints Peter and Paul served the growing German Catholic population in Cumberland at the time.Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos served as Pastor of the Parish & Prefect for the students from 1857-1862. After the departure of the Redemptorists and then the Carmelite Friars, the Capuchin Franciscan Friars arrived in 1875 and have served The Shrine of Saints Peter and Paul Church since then.

The Seelos Statue located in the Seelos Prayer Garden attached to the Shrine of St Peter & Paul,in Cumberland,Maryland is due to be officially blessed on Thursday 5th October 2023,the feast day of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos.      Father John Associate Pastor of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish which includes the Shrine of St Peter and St Paul  has said that the Seelos Feast Day is fine by him and they are now trying to decide the best time for the official blessing of the statue

A group of pro-life cyclists from Columbus,Ohio who are on their way to Washington,DC arrived at the Shrine of St Peter & Paul in Cumberland at 0630hrs this morning.

They are part of the 2023 National Ride which has 79 young adult missionaries aged 18-39 years old travelling over 100 miles a day for 6 days raising awareness and financial support for America`s pregnancy resource centres.The event takes place from the 10-15th July this year.In 2022 56 riders raised over $260,000 for the cause.

The group had wanted to visit during last years event but unfortunatly ran out of time. This years team which visited the Shrine consisted of Chris Sims,Ben Sanders,Marianne Rodriguez,Charles Jardine,Jessica Kantra,Joe Gagliardi,Mary Bookwalter,Robbie Commodari,Andrew Wenman & Father Ed Guilloux, a Catholic Priest from Arlington Diocese who is currently serving at St John the Apostle in Leesburg,VA.

The Group had stopped overnight in Cumberland and were shown around the Shrine at 0630hrs this morning. They were were informed about Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos and the 5 years he spent as Pastor of the Parish & Prefect for the students from 1857-1862.Some of the group also took time to visit the Seelos Prayer garden & grotto.

Joe George who is Chairman of the board of directors of  "The Friends of the Shrine of St Peter & Paul" told us "A group from “Biking for Babies” stopped at the Shrine of SS Peter & Paul today at 6:30 am for prayerful reflection and a tour, as they continue to travel by bike to Washington, DC. This Right to Life group, supporting pregnancy resource centers, has been biking from Columbus, Ohio to DC with a final celebration of life at a Church in Arlington, VA. Part of a National ride from July 9-16. The group is from various parts of the country and also has international members. They stopped overnight last night in Cumberland, MD, the convergence of the Great Allegany Passage trail from Pittsburgh, PA with the C&O Canal trail from Cumberland to Washington, DC. May the good Lord guide them & protect them on their journey as they spread their message of love. They also showed a great interest in St John Neumann who founded the church in 1848. Ann Getty is involved in a local Pregnancy Resource Center and she recommended it to them last year. It was great to see they made it this year!"

Catholic Review the Archdiocese of Baltimore`s Media Center has published a news item about the 175th Anniversary of the Shrine of St Peter & Paul,Cumberland whe Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos was Pastor from 1857-1862 as well as being Prefect of students at the Redemptorist Seminary located next door to the church.

The Redemptorists have served St. Mary`s Church in Annapolis,Maryland since 1853. Dr Robert Worden wrote a book about the Parish and gave a copy to St Mang Parish. Inside the book is a chapter about Blessed Seelos and it was this book which was the inspiration for starting the Seelos in Füssen website.Dr Worden is a historian and the Redemptorist Community have finally given him its top award. On Thursday May 25th Dr Worden was made an Oblate of the Congregation of the Holy Redeemer.He was recomended by the Superior General of Baltimore Province,Very Reverend John Collins C.Ss.R. and on the authority of the Superior General of the Redemptorists,Father Roger Gomes C.Ss.R. he was declared a Redemtorist Oblate. To be declared an Oblate a man or woman must have asssisted Redemptorists in their mission of proclaiming plentiful Redemption.

Father Rich Bouver has thanked Seelos in Füssen for congratulating him on his Golden Jubilee of Ordination.

For a while there was a little confusion to who the new Director of the Seelos Center in New Orleans would be.

HOWEVER Father Charlie Wehrley, Communications Director for the American Conference of Redemptorists clarified the situation for Seelos in Füssen 

UPDATE 2209hrs CEST "UPDATE 2209hrs I have checked with members of the new Baltimore Provincial Team: Jack Kingsbury has been assigned as Director of the St. John Neumann Shrine in Philadelphia. I do not know where the misinformation about New Orleans came from. Celebrating 50 Years of Priesthood

June 21st marks the 50th anniversary of Seelos Center Director Fr. Rich Boever's ordination to the priesthood.

Dear Devotees of Blessed Seelos,   Recently I received a 1999 issue of a publication called “Father Seelos and Sanctity” from a longtime devotee of Blessed Seelos. Many of our “old timers” will remember this publication – I remember it too, being a part of that esteemed group. I bring this up because it shows a photo of Father Monroe Perrier, C.Ss.R. taking over as Director of the Seelos Center.   We uphold a long history of Shrine directors moving on to new apostolates. In keeping with that process, I have received word that I will be moving along to our Redemptorist community in Tucson, Arizona.    It’s hard to leave the folks who have been part of the ongoing growth of our beloved Shrine and Center, but the intercession of Blessed Seelos and the promotion of his cause for canonization will continue. Pilgrims will be blessed and prayed with, tours will be received, and our wonderful staff will continue to serve your needs as best we can.    May you all be greatly blessed.

The Holy Mass for the Feast Day of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos will be celebrated here in Füssen on Thursday 5th October 2023 in Acht Seligkeiten Church,west Füssen at 0830hrs.The actual form of the Mass is being discused and it may include the Sacrament of the Sick and the singing of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos favourite hymn to Our Lady, "Milde Königin gedenke" which was sung around his death bed. It has also been suggested that after the Mass those present could be individually blessed with a first class relic of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos.

The final decision will of course be made by Our Parish Priest here in Füssen, Father Frank Deuring.

Shelly Raynal, Media Secretary for the National Seelos Center in New Orleans is visiting Füssen with her husband Gerald between the 14th and 17th June 2023.Seelos in Füssen arranged for them to have a tour around the city showing them all the places connected with the great  "Son of Füssen" Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos who was born in the Spitalgasse on 11 January 1819 and who die in New Orleans 4 October 1867.

Shelly is a great fan of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos and thanks him for her getting through 3 different forms of cancer. In 2015 she was honorary Captain of the New Orleans Saints.She was born and raised in New Orleans and is a great fan of the Saints Football team. She shared her story with the Saints for Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2015.She and her husband, Gerald have two sons named Gregory and Spencer. She works for Studio Mundi which runs the official National Seelos Center website and which was also responsible for updating the Seelos in Füssen website thanks to the help of Father Rich Bouver, Executive Director of the National Seelos Center, New Orleans.The couple also met Dr Miriam Rosenthal-English who was responsible for transalting the Novenna to Blessed Seelos into German.

Father Rich Bouver,National Director of the Seelos Center in New Orleans is retiring. Father Rich is much loved at  the Center and will be greatly missed. He has been recovering from lung cancer and his trip to Füssen on Pilgrimage last year really sapped his strength. Temporarily replacing him will be Father Maurice Nutt C.Ss.R. who is a well known Redemptorist Missionary who is also stationed in St Mary`s Assumption Parish New Orleans. Father Rich will celebrate his golden jubilee of Ordination on 21 June 2023.

My youngest daughter is in her last year at school and all her class must do a project which will be marked. This morning she was moaning about how all those who got their projects yesterday had brilliant subjects and today there would only be bad ones left for her. I told her I would pray she gets a good subject and at the same time had a premonition that maybe she gets Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos as a subject. What was the first ticket she pulled out ?See Below!(Seelos an Allgäu Saint?-Biography.Was he eligible for beatification or was it exagerrated? Answer the topic question?) Our house is full of Seelos relics,photos,books and DVD`s about this great Saint born here in Füssen where we live!I also run this website about him!

Thanks to the hard efforts of David & Paula Schoenadel, the Shrine of St  Peter & Paul in Cumberland,Maryland,U.S.A. finally has placed their new statue of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos in the grotto they both built in the Prayer Garden next to the Shrine.Blessed Seelos served in Cumberland between May 19th 1857 and 1862 as Pastor of the Parish and Prefect of students in the Redemptorist Seminary.

A blessing of the Statue is being arranged for a future date.

The Shrine of St Peter & St Paul in Cumberland is looking forward to at last having the statue of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos in the grotto within the Seelos Prayer Garden.

David and Paula Schoenadel told the members of the Save the Shrine of St Peter & Paul Facebook page    "Blessed Seelos statue update-We have scheduled a day next week for picking up the statue of Blessed Seelos from Wayman Scott of Baltimore,Md. Wayman is the artist who has sculpted the statue made specially for the grotto located at the Blessed Seelos Prayer Garden. It is one of its kind. When weather becomes more steadily favorable in the Spring, Blessed Seelos will be placed in his very own long awaited grotto. Plans are in the making for a dedication Blessing to take place after Blessed Seelos is placed in the grotto." 

The Shrine where Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos and Saint John Neumann served is celebrating its 175th Anniversary this year. Joe George the President of the board of directors of the Friends of the Shrine told us "Every 5 years the Archdiocese requires a formal inspection of Church facilities to do a condition assessment by an independent firm. The Friends of the Shrine paid $3,000 for an inspection by Bureau Veritas for the Archdiocese. All in all, for a 175 year old building, the 41 page report was favorable. There are 3 issues that we will be addressing:

Saint Mary’s Church and Novitiate, 1864. During his rectorship of St. Mary’s (1862-63), Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos established a fleet of sailboats to be used for recreation by the Redemptorist priests, brothers, and novices. St. Mary`s Parish, Annapolis, Maryland can trace its very existence back to George Carroll, the only Catholic  signer of the United States of America Declaration of Independence. He asked his granddaughter,  Mary Anne Caton Patterson to be in charge of the building of the first Catholic Church in Annapolis and gave the ground which it was built on. It was opened in 1823 and was able to house 150 people. It was a small one room building and was served monthly by the Jesuits from Prince Georges County until 1853 when the Redemptorist took over the Parish.

      Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos served in the Parish from April 16th to May 19th 1857 as Superior and Novice Master and also from June 14th 1862 to November 17th 1863 as Rector. In 1862, he was made Rector to St. Mary's Church and Novitiate, Annapolis, Maryland. It was during his posting here that he went to met President Abraham Lincoln to ask if the Redemptorist seminarians could be excused from military conscription during the Civil War.

On 9th February 2023 the Parish celebrated its 200th Anniversary of the opening of the original church.

Dr Angelo Giorlando M.D. died on the 24th January 2023 aged 96. He was born May 2nd 1926  in New Orleans. He attended the Redemptorist School, Redemptorist Seminary  in Missouri. He served in the US Army during the war. He became a Pediatric Doctor and was well renowned in his field. He was married for 70 years to Marie. They had 7 children, 11 grand children and 13 great grandchildren. 

In 1961 he was one of those who reignited the interest in trying to have Father Seelos canonised. In both 1965 & 1967 he was part of the team which excavated the remains of Father Seelos.

In 2006 he was inducted into the Order of Seelos Witness. This is the highest honour given by the National Seelos Shrine in New Orleans, U.S.A. Seelos in Füssen`s reporter in Spanish Fort made the news this month. Judy Hill Sullivan had told us back in November about her healing. She said " Here is another more personal gift, which I will report to the National Shrine later today.  My surgery last month to repair rotator cuff was successful. The rate of recovery to all the surrounding tissue is beyond natural.  You and I both know why this is excelerated, because prayers are carried by Father Seelos to grant a good outcome.  The initial injury was forty years ago on an icy patch at a Colorado Rocky Mountain ski resort.  Year 2021 -- it became time to address the function of this limb.  All result is beyond expectations... so much like our other good graces from our loving Jesus Christ!!
