On their recent visit to Germany,just what did our American Redemptorists find to fill their days? One might have expected them to be based out of Gars am Inn the nearest Redemptorist house here in Germany.Instead it was arranged for them to stay with Our Local Franciscans here in Füssen.

On one of the days they took a trip to Augsburg to visit the Cathedral and also the Grammar School where Seelos studied.

Then on another day,suitably clothed,they were given a tour of Füssen by our Deacon,Fredl Hofmann.The Deacon is a mine of information when it comes to Füssen and

Blessed Seelos,no one has more knowledge of these subjects than him.Our guests were fortunate to have the number 1 as their guide.

The Priests and congregation of St Mang Parish were delighted to welcome Redemptorists from the Denver Province,for Holy Mass in honour of the Baptism of the Lord and the 207th birthday and baptismal day of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos who was born here in Füssen and baptised in St Mang the same day,11th January 1819.

Father Frank Deuring,Parish Priest,concelebrated the 1800hrs 1st Mass of Sunday with the following Redemptorist Priests,Very Reverend Kevin Zubel C.Ss.R.-Provincial Superior of the Redemptorists of Denver Province,Reverend Aaron Meszaros,C.Ss.R.-Director of the National Shrine of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos in New Orleans, & Rev Thien Hoang,C.Ss.R.-Parish Priest of St Michael`s Chicago. Also assisting at the Mass was Deacon Fredl Hofmann. Fra.Scott Partin,C.Ss.R. was also in the sanctuary during Mass. Seated in the front row were Mark & Monica Surprenant,a couple from New Orleans who had donated the 1st class relic and reliquarry which was to be handed over by the Redemptorists on their behalf,to the Füssen Parish.

Mass started with Father Frank Deuring,Parish Priest,introducing our guests and welcoming them to our Parish.Then two of our Parishioners,Michael Plitzner and Sabine Muller took it in turns to tell us about the virtues of Blessed Seelos. It was mentioned that Mang Seelos, Father of the Blessed was sacristan of St Mang and that Xavier,as he was called within the family served at the Altar.It was also mentioned how our Deacon here in Füssen,Fredl Hofmann had showed our guests around his hometown.No one in Füssen has more knowledge of Blessed Seelos than the deacon,so the guests were indeed honoured to have him as their guide.

Sabrina Tiedtke,sang during the Mass and she sang a very relevant hymn in English,"Here I am Lord" which was very appropiate for a Mass honouring Blessed Seelos who gave his life for others  on the American Misions.Helene von Rechenberg played the organ. During the sermon,both Father Aaron and Father Kevin talked about the life of Blessed Seelos in English. Julie Messina translated into German what they said for those in the congregation who could not understand English.

After the sermon the Redemptorists handed the relic over to Father Deuring and the professional photographers who are allowed to take photos during Mass went in front of the Altar and clicked away!

After Mass was finished members of the congregation got in line to bless themselves with the relic which was being held by Father Kevin Zubel,C.Ss.R.

Mark & Monica Surprenant in St Mang Basilica 

Mark & Monica Surprenant of New Orleans were the couple responsible for donating a 1st class relic and its reliquary of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos to the Parish of St Mang here in Füssen.The relic was handed over to Parish Priest Father Frank Deuring during the 1800hrs 1st Mass of Sunday for the Baptism of the Lord which also happened to be the day before the 207th birthday of Blessed Seelos. A group of American Redemptorists had travelled specially to Füssen for the occasion and handed over the relic on behalf of the couple.

A hymn about Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos written by former Füssen teacher,Johanna Huber will be sung at the 1800hrs, 1st Mass of Sunday this Saturday in St Mang Basilica.

Johanna Huber was a daily Mass attendee and had a great love of music and Blessed Seelos.She used to run children`s choirs and taught them to sing the Seelos hymn with herself accompanying  on her guitar.She died at the age of 83 in 2019 after suffering from cancer. The song has been chosen by Helene von Rechenberg,Parish Musical Director for inclusion in the special Mass which will see a few visitors from the Redemptorist order present at the Mass.Johanna wrote the words to the hymn and our former Parish Musical Director Albert Frey composed the melody. It had been hoped that Dr.Miriam Rosenthal-English would sing the hymn for our guests but she has come down with a throat infection and is unable to sing.Sabrina Tiedtke will sing in her place.

The American Redemptorists are visiting Füssen to present the Parish of St Mang,where Blessed Seelos was baptised the day of his birth,with a relic of Blessed Seelos donated by Mark and Monica,who are devotees of Blessed Seelos for many years and have a deep affection for him. The relic being given, along with the reliquary is a gift of theirs."The Director of the National Seelos Shrine,Father Aaron Meszaros C.Ss.R. will hand the relic to Parish Priest Father Frank Deuring during the Mass. Members of the congregation will be able to be personally blessed with the relic after the Mass

Francis Xavier Seelos, a young man from Füssen, emigrated to the New World as a missionary in 1843. He lived in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia and belonged to the Redemptorist Order. He died of yellow fever at the young age of 48. In 2000, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II. What we know about him here today was discovered by his great-grandniece. The Group will fly to Munich on Monday 5th January 2026 which is also the Feast of St John Neumann,the first American Redemptorist Saint! They will then arrive in Füssen on 8th January and stay for 3 days untill the 11th January.On the 11th Jauary they will leave for Munich where their flight is due to take off for America on the 12th January.

The relic which is being given to the Parish of St Mang belongs to Mark & Monica who were the ones who fist proposed the wonderful gathering to strengthen ties between the city of Seelos Birth and the city where he died.

Saturday 10th January the Redemptorists and Mark & Monica will all be present at the 1800hrs,1st Mass of Sunday when Father Aaron will present Father Deuring,on behalf of St Mang Parish the relic of Blessed Seelos, which as far as we can attain is a bone of Blessed Seelos.Father Aaron confirmed to Seelos in Füssen "  Mark and Monica are devotees of Blessed Seelos for many years and have a deep affection for him. The relic being given, along with the reliquary is a gift of theirs."

The congregation present at the Mass will be able to recieve individual blessings with the relic after the Mass

Father Aaron Meszaros, Director of the National Shrine of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos told us "Shelly was such a treasure and gift to the work and mission of the Shrine, and as a person was a deeply wonderful woman." Shelly had worked as the Media Representive of the Shrine and took care of the Shrine website.She is sorely missed by all who she worked with. She had been struggling with cancer for many years and finally succumbed to it on 12th December 2025 aged 62.

A mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Assumption Church,New Orleans on Saturday December 27, 2025, at 11 AM. Visitation will be 9 to 11 AM.

Following Mass, a celebration of Shelly's life will be held from 1-4 PM at the Jackson Barracks Military Museum Located at 4209 Chenault Blvd, Jackson Barracks, New Orleans, LA 70117

Seelos in Füssen is sad to announce the death of Shelly Bacharach Raynal who was the Media Representative of the National Seelos Shrine in New Orleans and also responsible  for their website seelos.org   We remember her well and how helpful she was to Seelos in Füssen over the years. Eternal rest grant to her O Lord. May she rest in peace.Amen.

We remember when she visited Füssen with her husband,CMSgt(R) Gerald Raynal.She was already suffering from cancer but was always cheerful amd full of joy. She had a great love of Blessed Seelos and went out of the way to imitate his virtues. We thank God for having met her.

Father Frank Deuring,Parish Priest of the Füssen Partnership of Churches,which includes the Parish of St Mang,told "Seelos in Füssen" that on Saturday 10th January 2026,five priests will be travelling from America to Füssen.The priests will concelebrate Holy Mass in St Mang Basilica at 1800hrs(1st Mass of Sunday) and present to the Parish a relic of Blessed Seelos.The Parish where Seelos was born on 11th January 1819 already has an official 1st class relic, but no other relic of this great son of Füssen who spent half his life serving German imigrants on the American Missions.Seelos in Füssen is endeavoring to find out the names of our American visitors and also what the relic will be.

The main Altar with Harvest Festival gifts and The Seelos Pennant hanging above the Altar

The 1030hrs Mass on Sunday 5th October 2025 in St Mang Basilica,Füssen was celebrated by Parish Priest Father Frank Deuring.He was assisted by our  Deacon,Fredl Hofmann.This year the Feast of Seelos fell on a Sunday which just happened  to be Harvest Festival Sunday here in Germany. Father Deuring welcomed the many people who came and then proceeded to bless the Harvest gifts which adorned the front of the Altar.After this Michaela Plitzner,Petra Pfau & Sabine Müller took it in turns to tell the congregation about the life of Blessed Seelos and pointed out some of his virtues.

During his sermon,Father Deuring spoke about gifts,especially the gift of life.He also tied in how Blessed Seelos who was born in Füssen,11th January 1819, lived this great gift from God-Life.

The bidding prayers were read by the same three women who told us about Seelos`s life earlier,they included intercessions to Blessed Seelos for the problems which we face in our lives and the problems affecting the world in general.

The music for the Mass was provided by the Sunday Singers who chose really joyful hymns reflecting the life of Seelos who was given the nickname-"The Cheerful Ascetic"

After Mass Father Deuring and Deacon Hofmann gave individual blessings for healing to all those who wanted to recieve the blessing.It took 20 minutes for them to bless the large number who wanted the blessing

The Feast of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos this year falls on the German Harvest Festival Sunday. The National Shrine of St Peter & Paul in Cumberland,Maryland is where Blessed Seelos was posted twice. It is partt of the Our Lady of the Mountains Parish in the town. David & Paula Schoenadel are very keen gardeners and have made it a goal to make what is the best Seelos Prayer Garden in the world.It is a place of beauty and peace,where one can unwind from the worries of the world in the Company of Blessed Seelos,Our Mother Mary and many other Saints who have been placed in this spiritual oasis in the middle of Cumberland. The 25th Anniversary of the Beatification of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos was remembered in both Füssen in Germany where he was born and in New Orleans,U.S.A. where he died.

 On April 9th in Füssen, Deacon Fredl Hofmann presented an account of his life in Seeloshaus here in Füssen where over 20 people gathered to hear him. Deacon Hofmann knows more about Blessed Seelos and his life in Füssen than any other person alive. The evening started at 1900hrs when Parish Priest Father Frank Deuring told us a little about our great son of Füssen Francis Xavier Seelos. He went on to introduce the Deacon who then presented us with the life of Blessed Seelos in his own words and through slides. Mentioning how when he visited the Shrine in New Orleans he also assisted as Deacon during Holy Mass at St Mary`s Assumption dispite not understanding English at all!

He also showed those in the room various items connected with the blessed including a book which belonged to Seelos when he lived in the town.

To end the Evening Father Deuring told us that he had been in contact with Father Aaron Meszaros, Director of the National Shrine of Blessed Seelos in New Orelans who was amazed that we did not have a relic of Blessed Seelos here in Füssen and that he would look into trying to get one for the Parish!

In New Orleans they remembered with a 9 week Novena to Blessed Seelos,Two special healing Masses the Sunday before, One in English and the other in Spanish.

Two Louisiana Churches are arranging their 2nd Pilgrimage to the National Shrine of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos in New Orleans. St Peter Catholic Church in Reserve & St Hubert Catholic Church in Garyville will be visiting the Shrine on Thursday 10th April 2025. Those Parishioners wanting to go have until 8th April to confirm they are going.

A historic Redemptorist Parish famed for its stain glass windows has been given a $500,000 from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. On the Parish website of St Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church, St Louis, Missouri,  better know as the "Rock" they are proud to let everyone know that in 1866 Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos preached a Parish Mission there. The Parish is proud of its Black Congregation and in 1922 they made history by starting a weekly Novena in honour of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

The grant they have been given will be used to restore the stained glass window which were created by Meyer & Company from Munich, Germany in 1904.

The Cathedral of St Joseph in Baton Rouge administers the Sacrament of the Sick every month on the last Sunday of the month after the 1030hrs Mass.

The following is taken from the Cathedral website-

"This "Sacrament of the Sick" can be received by Catholics over the age of 7 who are suffering from either chronic or acute serious illness, facing major surgery, or are significantly enfeebled by old age. It is NOT a "once in a lifetime" event, but can be repeated when the illness is prolonged or becomes more serious.

The Redemptorist Fathers have loaned to the Cathedral, two, relics of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, C.Ss.R., who ministered in an especially effective way to the citizens of New Orleans during the massive yellow fever outbreaks there in the mid-1800s. In fact, Blessed Seelos - who was known as the "smiling saint" even when he was alive - has not yet been canonized a saint officially, but his intercession before God is powerful and as part of our monthly administration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick a special blessing is given with these relics. We hope that our prayers and devotion will hasten his cause for canonization!

22.44cm of snow has paralyzed New Orleans and especially the National Seelos Shrine which is located there! Reports coming into Seelos in Füssen say that the City is shut down and there is no snow clearing equipment!So the Shrine will remain shutdown till at least Friday!
